Pūrstream Technologies, Inc. plans to offer a monthly
disinfection service to MS4 operators to treat urban runoff within
the stormwater infrastructure. Pūrstream provides a turn-key
disinfection service using a proprietary, self contained
disinfection system that will be capable of operating unattended for
a month. The System is semi-portable, runs on batteries, and can be
deployed in-pipe.
The System uses a disinfection
process that involves the controlled introduction of a well known
and tested disinfectant. The System introduces the disinfectant
into the pipe through an industrial spray apparatus that can handle
water flows up to 50 gallons-per-minute. Unlike conventional
disinfection technologies, the System does not require any filtering
of urban runoff prior to treatment. The System can be deployed
above or below grade and is housed within a tamper proof vault that
is approximately the size of a washing machine. Pūrstream will
install and maintain the System as part of the monthly service.
Pūrstream uses a disinfectant that is
environmentally friendly and as such meets the California State and
Federal fishable / swimable standards. The disinfectant has been
used extensively to treat drinking water and is highly efficient,
which means that it requires small qualities to eliminate large
numbers of pathogen microorganisms. The disinfectant does not
produce any negative residuals to the environment.
Pūrstream has successfully completed
its first in-field, proof-of-concept trial in May where we achieved
better than expected results of multiple log reductions (90%(+) to
99.9% (+)) of pathogen microorganisms.
Pūrstream is currently optimizing the
System’s functionality and expects to be ready to provide service by
fall of 2004.
